  • Position Summary

    Cabot Barry currently has a day postion vacant in the Operations Group. The role forms part of the Operations Management team and the successful candidate will work closely with the Shift Manager group, HR department, and SHEQ Department. The Permit Superintendent/Training Facilitator role will take ownership to ensure the consistent application of the permit to work procedures and will coordinate the deployment of consistent training strategies and plans to improve the competence and flexibility of the Operations Department.


    Ideally the successful candidate will have had previous experience of a Shift Manager position. You will be thoroughly conversant in the chemical process operation of a plant having had significant experience previously with a demonstrable history of producing excellent results through strong motivational and coaching skills. You will be regarded as a strong team player both in terms of leadership abilities and as part of the larger Operations Management group. 

    Job Responsibilities

    The role is responsible for the following: -

    • Provide leadership to the Shift Teams in the best practice application of the Safe Permit to Work system and associated specialist permits.
    • Takes responsibility to ensure consistency across shifts in the application of the Safe Permit to Work system and specialist permits.
    • Takes ownership to identify improvement opportunities in the Safe Permit to Work system and associated specialist permits, and is responsible to plan and implement improvement ideas.
    • Takes responsibility for the auditing of the Safe Permit to Work system and the associated specialist permits, and to develop KPI’s for feedback to the Shift Managers on team performance.
    • Provide support to the permit office during periods of high workloads and takes ownership for managing the safety of maintenance technicians, contractors and the integrity of the process by managing activities under the permit to work process, work authorisation form and specialist permits, ensuring compliance with site standards, identification of hazards and ensuring appropriate controls are in place.
    • Takes responsibility to act as area co-ordinator during shutdowns and manage safe shutdown & start-up.
    • Takes ownership of the Co-ordination of Maintenance actions in assigned area.
    • Takes ownership of the application of HR processes and policies professionally and consistently to ensure fair and equitable treatment for all.
    • Represents the process team in RCAs, FMEAs, PSSRs and HAZOPs etc to support on going initiatives and ensure adequate consideration is given to decisions and conclusions that impact on or require input from the process team.
    • Is responsible for raising incident reports and non-conformance reports as appropriate, ensuring all necessary information is recorded accurately and in sufficient detail to allow others to follow-up where necessary. Takes immediate actions necessary to ensure that any issue raised is dealt with appropriately.
    • Liaise with HR to coordinate the on boarding of new starters and trainees and develop & manage the induction and basic level training processes in the business in an efficient and effective manner.
    • Support, Manage and Coordinate the training and development of the Operations Department to support key business imperatives and maximise resource flexibility and contribution to plant performance.
    • Work with relevant department contacts to devise and produce learning programmes and unit training modules which meet with identified departmental requirements, maintaining the relevant documentation accordingly.
    • Provide a single point of contact for all Operations Team Members to progress their training and development within the business.
    • Plan, Oversee and Lead activities to ensure capability and talent is effectively developed to meet business requirements.
    • Responsibility to maintain the job competency profiling process to ensure role requirements are reflected and up to date.
    • Takes ownership of tracking SOP & risk assessment reviews and assigns the Shift Teams documents for reviewing.
    • Supports the Operations Department by covering the Shift Manager Position as required by business critical needs.
    • Authorized to issue Work Authorization Forms (WAF’s) and Safe Work Permits (SWP’s) for all areas of site; also authorized to issue hot work, working on electrical systems, confined space entry supporting certificates. Confined space Entry Permits must be countersigned by FGM or nominated designee.
    • Takes responsibility for the performance and development of direct reports thrugh coaching and regular feedback and development sessions on a one to one basis.
    • Takes responsibility to effectively plan the working pattern of the Shift Relief Technician to ensure optimum absence cover whilst minimising overtime costs.

    Take responsibility for any other reasonable duties as required by the individual’s direct line manager.



    • Strong critical reasoning skills

    • In depth knowledge of the Fumed Silica Manufacturing Process.
    • Working knowledge of quality and statistical analysis tools and techniques.
    • High level of computer literacy, problem solving & trouble shooting skills and working knowledge of production control systems
    • Extensive experience in chemical process operation.
    • Preferably experience in supervisory position or Shift Manager.
    • Coaching and Motivational skills are essential for this position.
    • GCSE level in English, maths, science
    • City and Guilds Level 3 – Process Operations (or equivalent relevant experience or qualifications)
    • NEBOSH Cetificate in Safety or working towards.

    The Barry site is part of the Fumed Metal Oxide Business within the Performance Chemicals Segment of Cabot Corporation, and has an ‘over-the-fence’ relationship with Dow who is both a key supplier and customer. You will play an integral part of providing leadership and support to an operational plant through the Operations Management team.


    You would benefit from working Monday to Friday core hours (0830 – 1645). There may be occasional requirement for 24/7 working on an ad-hoc basis.
