  • Position Summary

    Cabot Barry currently has a vacancy for a Instrumentation and Electrical Technician. The successful candidate will be a strong team worker with excellent communications skills and a continuous improvement mindset. This role sits in a larger team of both I&E and Mechancial technicians and is expected to take ownership of the installation, commissioning & maintenance of all instrument/ electrical equipment on site to ensure equipment is maintained at its optimum performance. The successful candiate would also support a 24-hour maintenance cover on callout via a roster the successful candidate will display an aptitude for problem solving in their area of expertise and always think of safety first sure to work in a safe manner at all times. the successful candidate will be proactive and driven to succeed.

    Job Responsibilities

    • To take ownership of the responsibility for the regular/preventative and emergency maintenance of instrument / electrical equipment identified in a specific plant area to include leading small improvement teams.
    • Take ownership of trouble shooting through the resolution of problems using process databases in a timely fashion to minimise production losses, whilst maintaining health, safety and environmental standards at all times.
    • Take responsibility for the accurate historical record keeping of equipment using the computerised maintenance management system (CMMS), including the recording of labour hours within the CMMS.
    • Take ownership of the defining and recording of work method statements, risk assessments and preventative maintenance programmes with the team ensuring strict adherence to the site permit to work systems.
    • Once fully trained take ownership of self supervision and ownership for the supervision of & assistance to contractors including leading small teams of contractors of a similar discipline at plant shut down events.
    • To be responsible for managing the testing of equipment system to ensure timely calibration and replacement of equipment.
    • Support others through non complex multi-flexible working within other maintenance disciplines.
    • Responsible for providing call-out cover to ensure correct level of support available at all times to the plant.
    • Be responsible for planning and organising work so that relevant equipment is available when required in order that a defined work schedule can be completed.
    • Be responsible for excellent communications with; Engineering contractor to aid with project improvements to include technical support; manufacturers reps to provide quotes for equipment purchase/improvement & to aid fault resolution.
    • Take ownership for the provision of technical support to the Stores Manager on specific equipment enquiries.
    • To support the drive to excellence through participation in a number of site activities and engineering meetings that will drive improved reliability and continuous improvement of plant and equipment.





    • Technical expert in all levels of modern instrumentation expected to be found on a chemical processing plant including trouble shooting and calibration. (Training provided to remain abreast of new technologies.)
    • Understanding of ladder logic and ability to perform first line maintenance on PLC system.
    • Working knowledge of Hazardous area instrumentation, maintenance and protection concepts.
    • Technically competent in maintenance techniques.
    • Ability to interrogate relevant data stored in site systems to aid trouble shooting

    • Competent in full range of maintenance skills of electrical control equipment up to 415 volts including variable speed drive technology

    The Barry site is part of the Fumed Metal Oxide Business within the Performance Chemicals Segment of Cabot Corporation, and has an ‘over-the-fence’ relationship with Dow Corning who is both a key supplier and customer. As an Instrumentation and Electrical Technician you would be joining a successful maintenance team and play an integral part of providing maintenance support to an operational plant.


    You would benefit from working Monday to Thursday:07:00-15:15, Friday: 07:00-14:30 (this includes a 30 minute meal break). As an I & E Technician you will follow a shift pattern that incorporates a 2-10pm late shift on a rotational basis.The working hours may occasionally be changed to suit the operational requirement and will require working on call for which attractive remuneration is offered.
