Our location in Barry (Sully, Vale of Glamorgan) has been established in 1992 as manufacturing site producing hydrophilic and treated Fumed Silica in close collaboration with Dow.


    We are currently looking for an Instrumentation and Electrical (I&E) Technician to join our Maintenance Department. The successful candidate will be a strong team player with excellent communications skills and a continuous improvement mindset. This role sits in a larger team of both I&E and Mechanical technicians and is expected to take ownership of the installation and commissioning of all instrument & electrical equipment on site and to ensure equipment is maintained at its optimum performance at all times. The successful candidate will display an aptitude for problem solving in their area of expertise and always think of safety first at work at all times. Finally, we are looking for an I&E Maintenance Technician who will be proactive and driven to succeed.


    The working schedule is Monday to Thursday: 07:00-15:15, Friday: 07:00-14:30 (this includes a 30-minute meal break). As an I&E Maintenance Technician you will follow a shift pattern that incorporates a 2-10 pm late shift once a week on a rotational basis. You would also support a 24-hour maintenance cover on callout via a roster with the candidate being on call one evening a week and one weekend in five weeks.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Responsible for the regular, preventative and emergency maintenance of instrument & electrical equipment identified in a specific plant area to include leading small improvement teams.
    • Trouble shoot through the resolution of problems using process databases in a timely fashion to minimize production losses, whilst maintaining health, safety and environmental standards at all times.
    • Accurate historical record keeping of equipment using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), including the recording of labour hours within the CMMS.
    • Define and record of work method statements, risk assessments and preventative maintenance programmes with the team ensuring strict adherence to the site permit to work systems.
    • Plan and organise work so that relevant equipment is available when required in order that a defined work schedule can be completed.
    • Once fully trained, take ownership of self-supervision and supervision of contractors including leading small teams of contractors of a similar discipline at plant shut down events.
    • Manage the testing of equipment system to ensure timely calibration and replacement of equipment.
    • Responsible for excellent communication with Engineering contractor to aid with project improvements to include technical support; manufacturers reps to provide quotes for equipment purchase/improvement & to aid fault resolution.
    • Provide technical support to the Stores Manager on specific equipment enquiries.
    • Drive to excellence through contribution in numerous site initiatives and engineering meetings that are aiming to enhance reliability and continuous improvement of the production plant and equipment.
    • Support colleagues within other maintenance disciplines.


    • Hold a recognized Engineering Apprenticeship in a relevant discipline (Electrical, Instrumentation);
    • Hold relevant technical qualifications such as ONC/HNC/NVQ/C&G in relevant engineering discipline;
    • Hands-on experience in medium to heavy process industry (ideally on Chemical plants);
    • Good knowledge of instrumented systems, LV systems and control systems;
    • Technical expert in all levels of modern instrumentation expected to be found on a chemical processing plant including trouble shooting and calibration. (Training will be provided to remain abreast of new technologies);
    • Understanding of ladder logic and ability to perform first line maintenance on PLC system;
    • Working knowledge of Hazardous area instrumentation, maintenance and protection concepts;
    • Technically competent in maintenance techniques;
    • Ability to interrogate relevant data stored in site systems to aid trouble shooting.

    • Cabot offers a base salary in the band of £27,000-£41,000 dependent on relevant experience and qualifications plus on call allowance, premium callout payments, pension scheme, private medical cover, 26 days holidays plus other local benefits.
